You Can Do It
Diet determines health and life expectancy for dogs and
cats. This site is for owners who choose to feed diets they can prepare
for normal pets and for those with medical problems. These diets are
formulated with a computer program to insure that they are balanced and
complete. The diets are prepared from unprocessed foods marketed for human
consumption and are readily available in a food market. Pet owners can
control the quality and wholesomeness of a diet’s ingredients.
How to begin
For an adult dog or cat determine its
normal body weight. At the top are four
menu bars to find your pet's caloric requirements for use in determining
its dietary needs. The tables show your pet's caloric needs at any given weight. Then
you can find a diet you would like to feed from the diets for normal dogs
or cats. Each diet shows its caloric content and the size of pet that it
would feed. For pets larger or smaller than the weight of pet that a
recipe would satisfy, you can adjust the amount to feed for your pet.
For a puppy or pet still growing you need to judge what its final weight
would be as an adult as well as its weight and age at the current time.
You will find its caloric needs from the tables using the pet's current age
and its estimated adult body weight. This site also contains a table
showing how much a pet of a given weight at 2 months would weigh at
different intervals until maturity.
Adjustments are made to the diets for normal pets to feed during
pregnancy and lactation; they are also found under one of the menu bars above.
A table showing a cat's and kitten's caloric needs is also found under the menu bar
above.
Before proceeding further you are advised to read sections in the appendix
called Feeding Normal Dogs & Cats.
Discussions in the Appendix provide information on many other aspects of
feeding normal and diseased pets.
